I think that even though it has the personal elements of a blog post, it would be a worthy addition to the Tairis site. :)nefaeriahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04068749178602795562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7758267616106239950.post-3682214937585140092012-01-27T09:28:52.549+00:002012-01-27T09:28:52.549+00:00Hi Amanda. You're welcome, I'm glad you go...Hi Amanda. You're welcome, I'm glad you got something out of it :)

Syncretism can be a tricky one, especially when we're talking about the Gaels. It's easier if you're dealing with Scotland or Man rather than Ireland, I think, because of the influences they were subjected to. Any influences Ireland was subjected to weren't as strong as Scotland, so arguably the case for historical syncretism isn't as strong for Ireland as it is for Scotland or Man. There's definitely a difference between syncretism that has a historical basis, compared with non-historical syncretism. The latter couldn't be considered compatible with a reconstructionist approach, really.

I deal with some syncretism myself, because many of the traditions I observe have Norse influences or even roots, but that's what comes from living in Scotland, I suppose, and having a Scottish focus. They're pretty much ingrained. The Norse gods, though, I've never had any calling from them, I don't think, but there are some folks who are working on a more syncretic path.

@Kilmeny, I wish I could remember who came up with the thread idea so I could give them due credit for such inspiration.Serenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15106896818087205418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7758267616106239950.post-42920590308956270732012-01-27T02:01:57.613+00:002012-01-27T02:01:57.613+00:00Thank you for this post. You're right in that most of us have to go through a continual process of re-alignment of our world view to better connect with the traditions of our ancestors. I also like the imagery of the red thread.Kilmenyhttp://reuliuilbride.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7758267616106239950.post-46517573298051558792012-01-27T00:53:37.393+00:002012-01-27T00:53:37.393+00:00Thank you for this. In another venue, I am in a conversation with others about personal practice and it has somewhat turned into another conversation about what is acceptable as far a venerating deities from other traditions. For me as a predominantly Gaelic CR, I've had long relationships with the deities that I work with, but there are a couple from what I would consider "neighboring" traditions who seem to crop up from time to time. One Norse God in particular and a couple of Brythonic deities. The struggle with trying to remain authentic and not fall into the neo-pagan trap of rampant syncretism while at the same time honoring where experience and gnosis leads me is wearing me a bit thin. Thank you for reminding me that this is new territory for all of us, and that the doing is what is important. I think a lot of people (including myself) research themselves into a corner and thus end up doing nothing.Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12217935120177154949noreply@blogger.com
